thanks for your reply
Do you also have an indication on what the broken part of the abs could be. Is it the electrics (cdi box)?

who should be able to help you here with unknown bike (VIN!) and unknown ABS version?
If God wouldn't ride a BMW, why is sky still white and blue? Pezi

What I now know is that it concerns the computer of the abs. My workshop has ordered one, a secondhand model, but it does not work. Ik think it is a computer of a later model. does it have to be specific. My 1200rs is from 1997.

Morning Jane, jagtegaal hat geschrieben:a secondhand model, but it does not work. Ik think it is a computer of a later model. does it have to be specific.
ABS2 Hydro Unit (pressure modulator together with control unit) is not only used in K1200RS models 1997-2000. Same cluster you will find in some R850, R1150 up to R1200C too.
But the "computer" has to run different programs depending on weight/balance of the bike it is thought for.
This is managed in 2 steps:
1) Bike specific program is loaded at factory. Internally it is stamped with a checksum
2) When inserted into a bike, the socket has 4 special input pins (wires in cable harness which are grounded or not depending on model). That gives 2^4 = 16 coded possibilties for different machines.
Whenever doing self-test the ABS2 computer compares the coded inputs to its internal saved checksum. If the result doesn't match the ABS doesn't work! Bad news, your probability is only 1:15.
What you can do now:
1) Investigate where from your secondhand "computer" comes, K- or R-bike? (Maybe you'll get crazy on this task

2) Change your workshop (seems to have little BMW knowledge and experience?) and go to an authorized BMW dealer. He should be able to do a master reset and reprogram your hydro-unit fitting for a K1200RS.
Good luck, Pezi
thanks Pezi
I'm still worried if this can be solved the easy way....but i'm very thankfull Pezi for your experd knowledge and advice.
I will let you know when it is solved.

Hi Jane,
in what part of Holland are you living ??
I know that in the area where I am coming from (Rotterdam area) there's a very good independant workshop who knows his way around with BMW's - he has worked many years with an offical BMW dealer before he started his own workshop.
He found my ABS problem within 5 minutes and should also know his way around with use parts.
Regards,
Detlef

It has been fixed
In the end it became all clear. And also because of the good tips I got from this Forum.
My dealer first thougt that the ABS was broke because his computer did not recognise it. (or something like that) After installing two ABS units he decided to visit an official BMW dealer and there they saw that it was an ABS of a BMW Cruiser. After this it was only a question of resetting it.
My dealer contacted the supplier of his computer immediatly. It happens that his software could read, but not reset the older BWW models. His software will be upgraded that in the future he can do it himself.
I'm very happy to drive my 1200rs. The comfort, power and preformance fits my way of driving. An eye-opener after driving a R65 and ZZR 1100.
Thanks again!
Jane
